Delaware City, DE – Denton Ford, part of the Preston Automotive Group, reports that Ford Motor Company has earned a Popular Mechanics Award for their recent seat belt innovation. Ford’s innovative, industry-first rear inflatable seat belts have been named a Breakthrough Product Award winner by Popular Mechanics, part of the magazine’s seventh annual Breakthrough Awards.
Lead developer Srini Sundararajan will accept the prestigious honor at a ceremony tonight in New York City. The development of the technology was a team effort, Sundararajan says, and he’s proud that effort is being recognized.
“Ford’s goal is to develop innovative safety technologies that give our customers more peace of mind, so it is a great honor to receive the Breakthrough Technology Award,” says Sundararajan, safety technical leader for Ford Research and Innovation. “I thank Popular Mechanics for recognizing the contributions of a number of dedicated engineers from Ford.”
The rear inflatable seat belts are designed to provide additional protection for rear seat occupants. They combine the attributes of traditional seat belts and airbags to help provide an added level of crash safety protection for rear seat occupants. The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries. Ford introduced the inflatable rear seat belts in the 2011 Explorer, bolstering the Explorer’s already extensive suite of safety innovations. The vehicle already has seen strong demand from customers for its safety and driver-assist technologies.
Early data showed approximately 40 percent of Explorer buyers are parents who are ordering the rear inflatable belts.
The rear inflatable seat belt technology will be introduced in more vehicles globally.

So-called ”C-segment” cars, generally known as compacts in the U.S. Both the Hatchback and sedan models of the Ford Focus have had an extensive exterior make-over. Ford has given the Focus a more bolder, yet sporty/trendy look that the whole family will enjoy. Ford definitely went back to the drawing board for more aerodynamics with a sleek look.
The Focus has been given a 160 horsepower engine that gets upwards to 40 mpg. Currently there are 7 different combinations of the Focus which range from either a sedan model or hatchback model with these trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. The Focus ST will be out later this year which gives the driver an engine enhancement of a 247 horse-power twin-turbo engine. Inside the new Focus is packed with high technology and invigorating design. The driver gains grippy seats, excellent door coverings, and with plenty of room all around. Hybrid vehicle buyers and driver are motivated by many different things to buy a gas-electric car, SUV, or truck. Whether the reason is for the environment, oil dependency, or even the latest trend, you will still need to have the vehicle serviced at a certified hybrid service center. Preston Ford Lincoln now has Master Hybrid Auto Technicians that specialize in hybrid service for all makes and models and is a certified hybrid service center.
With the latest gas price spike not even reaching the peak summer months, many buyers are looking for way to save their gas money and are turning to buying hybrid cars and trucks. Many of whom are looking for a local shop to service and repair their hybrid vehicles. Back in 2006 R.L. Polk did a study and found that 255,000 new hybrids were registered that year. Five years later sales of new hybrids have gone up and the technology in the hybrid has only become more complex. Hybrid owners are finding that they need a certified hybrid technician to be able to service their hybrid vehicles or else they could be looking at very expensive repairs.
Though hybrids have the reputation as being mostly trouble-free, there are many components that are unique to the hybrid needless to say it will get complicated very quickly. Preston Ford Lincoln has invested in all the necessary equipment to provide the correct repair and service to hybrid vehicles of all makes and models not just Ford. “We have been seeing a lot a customers purchasing our hybrid models both new and used so we have to make sure we keep up with all the technologies in the Fords, Toyotas, Hondas, and so forth so we have really tightened up on our expectations from our technicians to be certified in hybrid technology and repair,” says Skip McCracken of Preston Ford Lincoln.
